How Is Our Daily Diet Closely Related to Facial Skin Health?

What is the Skin Made of?

If you're wondering how the skin is made up, it combines collagen, elastin, and keratin. Collagen is the main structural component of skin; elastin gives it elasticity. 

Therefore, when you smile or laugh, your wrinkles go away. Meanwhile, keratin provides strength and protection from environmental damage.

 

The outermost layer of our epidermis (the part we can see) has three layers: 

  1. stratum corneum (outer layer)
  2. corneocytes (dead cells), a granular layer consisting of basal cells at its deepest level, which are constantly dividing to replace old cells with new ones; 
  3. the spinous layer where keratinocytes begin their journey towards becoming cornified; the papillary dermis beneath this contains blood vessels and nerves that transmit signals back up through this network into our brains, so we know what's happening in our surroundings!

How Does the Body Use Nutrients?

You know that nutrients are used by the body to build and maintain tissues, right? Well, that's true for all organs. The skin comprises layers of cells, just like most other organs in your body. 

It also serves many vital functions. The skin protects you from the following:

  • injury and infection,  
  • helps regulate body temperature, 
  • acts as an organ system (the integumentary system), 
  • and, most notably, for this topic, it acts as a barrier against environmental stressors like UV radiation from the sun.

The epidermis (outermost layer) protects against external hazards such as injury or infection. In contrast, the dermis (innermost layer) contains connective tissue fibers that give strength to support superficial structures such as hair follicles.
